Soil and Fertilizer

Mixing your own soil for succulents and cacti can be daunting, I get it. Here are the premade mixes I feel comfortable recommending to other fat plant collectors. I encourage you to experiment with different mixtures and watch your plants carefully to see how they react!

Miracle Gro Cactus Mix

All things considered, this is a well-balanced mix. It may be a bit too damp for some succulents, so consider cutting it with perlite.

Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix

My favorite off-the-shelf substrate for succulents and cacti. This is a gritty mix, not soil, so you might have to water more often!

Jobe's Succulent Fertilizer Spikes

These slow-release fertilizer spikes make fertilizing a once-per-year, simple endeavor. It's an effective and low-maintenance solution.

Espoma Organic Cactus Plant Food

To be honest, succulents and cacti don't need a special type of fertilizer. The trick is in application. I use a tiny dash of liquid fertilizer like this in most watering sessions.
